Abstract

In spring 2008, a survey was made to investigate the brown trout in three different lakes. 94 brown trout were collected and examined. This study is concerned with the ecology of the brown trout in the Faroes. There have been some studies of the brown trout in the Faroes. I thought it wold be interesting to make a survey on this subject and get an updated view of the brown trout. This study will describe the brown trout and its environment and therefore many parameters have been examined. The physiology of the fish, length, weight, age, sex, condition factor, maturity, liver, stomach content and gonads have all been examined. This study compares the brown trout from three lakes on three different islands, which will give a good indication of the well-being of the trout. Additionally, I wanted to examine whether there was a difference in the brown trout between the lakes. These lakes were Toftavatn, Leitisvatn and Sandsvatn. In all, this will mainly be a descriptive study, which should shed some light on the condition of the brown trout in the Faroes.
