On May 11 and on May 25 2004 we conducted fishing trials with longline gear, and handline fishing trials in April 2004. The objective was to compare different baits, to see how they performed. The catch consisted mostly of whiting and haddock. Whelk bait proved to be more effective in catching cod on the longline, and generally caught larger fish, while on the handline it caught smaller cod, and did so no more effectively than the squid Loligo forbesi. No major difference in catching efficiency was found between sandeel and two types of squid.
