Abstract

In the project “Faroe-AMOC”, we study the modification of the warm Atlantic inflow
across the Iceland-Faroe Ridge (IFR). This branch, the IF-inflow (Figure 1), is the
strongest of the three branches carrying warm water to the Nordic Seas and further
into the Arctic. The IF-inflow carries almost 50% of the total warm-water inflow.
We show that the inflow is strongly cooled and freshened by mixing with colder and
less saline deeper water on its path across the IFR.
This modification reduces the oceanic heat transport towards the Arctic and weakens
the potential for thermohaline ventilation in the Arctic.
