Abstract
This article is about the origin and meaning of the word ruðul. The word is
only known from the song Sildavalsurin, which is a well-known Faroese party
song written by Poul Arni Joensen (1920˗2011) and Oskar Hermannsen
(1920˗1995) in the 1950s. The meaning is ‘chaos’. Here the view is put forward
that the authors have made the word for the occasion.
