Abstract
For approximately 400 years, the rural dean was the highest ecclesiastical leader in the Faroe Islands. In connection with the election of a new dean in 1783, Andrias Djurhuus, who was elected himself, put forward a proposition to divide the islands into two deaneries, each with a rural dean of its own. This essay aims to present the proposition in its original context and draw a line to the recent amendment from 2023 of the Law on the Folks Church in the Faroes, which finally gives the legal basis to appoint a second dean.
