The Sea Trout Project: Annual Report 2022

Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned report

Abstract

At the request of Havbúnaðarfelagið, studies of sea trout have been conducted with the aim of investigating when during the year they might migrate to the sea for the first time and how well they thrive in the marine environment.
Results from 2019-2022 show that there are differences between years in the timing of first sea entry, an that the age of the sea trout at the time of their first migration to sea is consistently reflected in their size.
There are also interannual differences in the condition of trout when they first enter the sea, as well as in the condition of larger trout at sea. Sea trout carry the highest lice loads from April to August, while during the remaining months they have few or no lice. This indicates that the trout de-louse in freshwater.
