Abstract
The article discusses the spelling of a Faroese word, which traditionally is spelled skotbrá, 'short interval (in time)'. The author proposes an alternative spelling, skábrá, which is a spelling variant in Faroese dictionaries. The proposal of replacement of the spelling is based both on phonological and semantic criteria. All word with skot as the first element in compound words in Faroese has the pronuciation /sko:t/ or /skɔt:/. On the other hand, the pronunciation of skábrá is /skɔbrɔa:/. The first element ská is a variant of skái 'lull, let-up in the wind or storm'.
