Abstract

The feather mite Picalgoides diaphanoxus (Bonnet, 1924) comb. n. (Pandalurinae), initially described in the genus Mesalges Trouessart & Neumann, 1888, is transferred to the genus Picalgoides Černý, 1974 and redescribed based on the material from the Common Raven, Corvus corax Linnaeus (Passeriformes: Corvidae) collected in the Faroe Islands, Denmark. Additionally, this mite is recorded from the Eurasian Jackdaw Coloeus monedula Linnaeus (Corvidae) in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. Picalgoides diaphanoxus is most similar to P. caudilobus (Grube, Citation1859) and clearly differs from the latter in having the following features: in males, the anterior margin of the hysteronotal shield is strongly convex, the aedeagus barely extends beyond the genital arch apex, and the adanal apodemes are fused into an entire arch; in females, the hysteronotal shield is almost rectangular in shape with rounded posterior corners, and epimerites I are fused in a V. Natural hosts and distribution of P. diaphanoxus are briefly discussed. The Pied Crow Corvus albus is fixed here as the type host of P. diaphanoxus.
