Abstract

The article focuses on two unintended consequences of purism in the Faroe Islands: 1) the purism has caused an increase in the Faroese lexicon, because many neologisms do not manage to replace the import words. The result is a lot of synonyms, one neologism and one import word.
2) the purism is a reason to the big gap between speech and written language in Faroese.
