Abstract
This study focuses on the role of the internship supervisor in Faroese teacher education. On paper, the supervisor is both a primary school teacher and a teacher educator making this dual task problematic. In order to get a nuanced insight into the supervisor's primary contribution to teacher training, we supplemented an extensive questionnaire survey (n=2823) among Nordic student teachers in 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 with in-depth interviews with five Faroese student teachers in their final year of study. The mixed method study shows that the internship supervisor task is not well defined, but that most Faroese supervisors position themselves as primary school teachers, who use most of the supervision time to observe, evaluate and guide the students in relation to their teaching and classroom management competence. The task of building a bridge between the university discourse/primary school discourse and theory/practice is far less visible. The study also showed that Faroese student teachers do not expect theory/practice linkages to be part of internship supervisors' area of responsibility and expertise.
