Navigating identity and self-worth in an “othering” milieu: Glimpses of the journey of an immigrant academic in higher education

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter highlights the experience of “othering” in the journey of an immigrant academic in a tertiary educational institution using an autoethnographic approach. In keeping with this tradition, the narrative voice of the subjective journey is created through self-reflection and sense-making from emic perspectives of the marginalised immigrant. The academic setting, with the exclusion it perpetrates, is viewed from the perspectives of racial microaggression and hierarchical microaggression. The “othering” experience of the author through cultural encounters in the work–life environment is dealt with through negotiating perspectives towards an acceptance of self in the face of alienation caused by complex factors. The importance of immigrant resilience in this complex journey towards self-acceptance and self-empowerment is acknowledged.
