Abstract

Christian Matras has argued that V. U. Hammershaimb’s activity to promote a Faroese literature came to a halt in the period of 1855-1878 when he was employed as a pastor and rural dean of the Faroe Islands. The article aims to demonstrate that Hammershaimb won quite a number of disciples among young Faroe Islanders, thankful pupils, who would in their turn use Hammershaimb’s orthography in their writing.
