Abstract

Í hesi frágreiðingini eru tilsamans 5.927 harur skrásettar at vera skotnar í Føroyum í 2019.

Kanningin byggir á tøl frá tilsamans 755 harutúrum í 299 hagapørtum kring landið. Í 20 teimum bestu haruhøgunum skutu teir tilsamans 1.971 harur, sum er 33% av samlaðu veiðuni í Føroyum í 2019. Helvtin av harunum vórðu skotar í 47 hagapørtum, av hesum vórðu 1.092 harur (25%) skotnar í 13 teimum bestu høgunum.

Raskastu at skjóta harur í Føroyum í 2019 vóru teir, sum skutu í í Kvíggjarhamarshaga í Saksun.

Mett verður, at í 2019 skutu umleið 950 mans harur í Føroyum.

Summary (in English)
This is the eight yearly census of hares hunted in the Faroe Islands. The hunting season is from November 2nd to December 31st. The first census was conducted in 2012.

The survey is based on data collected through the webpage “haran.fo”, which was created for this purpose. The investigation is based on information from 755 distinct hunting expeditions carried out in 299 outfields covering most of the Faroe Islands.

In the present overview, 5,927 hares are registered as shot in the Faroe Islands. Based on this, I estimate the total number of hunted hares being approximately 6,000 animals in 2019.

On the first hunting day (Friday November 2ad) 1,047 hares were shot in 71 fields.

In the 20 best hunting fields, a total of 1,971 hares were shot, corresponding to 33% of the hunted hares. Half of the hares were shot in 47 outfields. Half of these, i.e. 1,092 hares, where shot in 13 of the best outfields.

The most successful hare-hunters in the Faroe Islands in 2019 were those from the outfield ‘Kvíggjarhamarshaga’ belonging to the village Saksun. In total, they shot 214 hares in 10 trips. On the second place were those from “Norðurtriðingur - Norðaripartur” in the village Sørvágur, with a total of 170 hares in 11 trips. On third place were those from ‘Botnar’ in the village Funningur. They shot 133 hares in 7 hunting expeditions.

However, if the hunting statistics are adjusted by the number of trips and shots, then the top-3 list changes. Then the field ‘Bergið’, belonging to the village Árnafjørður was the most successful. In this field a single man shot 15 hares in a single trip. Number two and three were those from the field ‘Fyri oman Rætt - Fjallið’, belonging to the village of Gjógv, and those from the field ‘Áarhagi – Heimanfyri’ in the village Kaldbak. In both of these fields the average outcome was 10.5 hares per gun per day.

Overall, 3.10 hares where shot per gun per day in the Faroe Islands in 2019. This is more than in 2018, when 2.79 hares were shot per gun per day, but less than in 2017, when they got 3.18 hares per gun per day.

Most of the hares were shot on the island of Streymoy with a total of 2,714, corresponding to 36% of the hunted hares in the Faroe Islands in 2019. On the island Vágar, 1,247 hares were shot, 943 on Eysturoy and 313 hares on the island of Borðoy.

The village Vestmanna on the island Streymoy is, as in the previous years, the place where most hares were shot in 2019. In total, they shot 584 hares on 52 trips.

During the 755 individual hunting trips in 2019, the hunting success ranged from 0 to 97 hares on each trip. The most common success rate was between 1 and 4 hares on a single day. Over the whole season, 7.65 hares were shot on an average a trip. This is more than in 2018, when they shot 7.02 in average on a day but somewhat less than in 2017, when on average 8.14 hares were obtained per trip. In 2014 and 2013, they shot 8.12 and 8.20 hares on average during each trip, respectively.

The number of hunters on a trip ranged from 1 to 18. On half of the trips (the median), an average of 2.0 or fewer hunters participated, In 277 cases (37%), the hunter was alone.

Only men hunt hares in the Faroe Islands. It is estimated that approximately 950 hunters participated in hare-hunting in the Faroe Islands in 2019, corresponding to around 4% of the total male population.

A preliminary study shows that one third of the Faroese hares are infected with tapeworms.
