SAMANDRÁTTUR
Hetta er triðja royndin at gera eitt yvirlit yvir, hvussu nógvar harur verða skotnar í Føroyum. Fyrsta royndir var gjørd í 2012.
Í yvirlitinum eru tilsamans 9.318 harur skrásettar at vera skotnar í Føroyum í 2014.
Raskastir at skóta harur í Føroyum í 2014 vóru teir ‘Úti í Haga á Bjørgum’ í Vestmanna.
Mett verður, at í 2014 skutu einir 1.200 ymiskir mans harur í Føroyum.

Summary
This is the third census of hares caught in Faroe Island during the hunting season, from 2 November to 31 December. The first census was conducted in 2012.
The survey is based on data collected, using a Facebook-group named “Hare hunting in the Faroe Island”, created for this purpose. The group has around 2,000 members. After a hunting expedition, a participant reports the ‘Date’, ‘Name of the respective outfield’, ‘Number of hares hunted’ and ‘Number of shooters participated’. The reporting is based on voluntary participation. Then the data is transferred into a database, used for analyzing the data.
The investigation is based on information from 1,123 distinct hunting expeditions carried out in 348 different outfields covering the most of the Faroe Islands.
In the present overview, 9,318 hares are registered shot in the Faroe Islands in 2014. Based on this, I estimate the total number of hunted hares in the Faroe Islands in 2014 has been around 9,400 animals.
Assuming half of the hare population is being hunted each year the total number of hares in the Faroe Islands was around 20,000 in 2014.
Half of the hares were shot in 47 outfields, and 2,323, i.e. 25% of total, in 16 outfields. In the 20 best hunting fields in the Faroe Islands in 2014, they shot in total 2,664 hares, corresponding to 29% of all hare hunted in 2014.
The most successful hare-hunters in the Faroe Islands in 2014 were those from the outfield ‘Úti í Haga á Bjørgum’ belonging to the village Vestmanna. In total, they shot 214 hares on 11 trips. In second place were those from ‘Norðurtriðingi, Norðara parti’ in Sørvági, with 202 hares from 14 trips. Number three were those from ‘Neshaga’ also in village Vestmanna. They got 202 hares on 14 hunting expeditions.
However, if hunting statistics is adjusted by number of trips and shots, then the top-3 list changes. The field ‘Fyri Norðan’, belonging to the village Hvannasund, would then be the most successful. In this field a single man shot 11 hares on a single trip. Number two would then be the guys hunting in ‘Skarðhamri’ also in Hvannasundi, shooting 10.6 hares per gun per day. Number three were those from the field ‘Dúvugarðarhaga, Niðanfyri Glyvur’, belonging to the village Saksun, with 9.7 hares per gun per day.
Overall, 3.1 hares where shot per gun per day in the Faroe Islands in 2014, compared to 2.9 in 2013.
Most hares were shot on the island Streymoy with a total of 3,924, corresponding to 42% of hunted hares in the Faroe Islands in 2014. On the island ‘Vágar’ 1,893 hares were shot, on ‘Eysturoy’ 1,415 and on the island ‘Borðoy’ 840 hares.
The village Vestmanna on the island Streymoy is, as in the previous years, the place where most hares were shot in 2014. In total, they shot 1,120 hares in the 12 outfields belonging to this village.
On the first Saturday in the hunting season (8th November) 1,703 hare were shot in103 fields. This is 18% of the catch in 2014 and 13% of the trips. On the last hunting day (31st December), a total of 256 hares were shot in 47 fields.
On the 1,123 individual hunting trips in 2014, the hunting success ranged from 0 to 66 hares on each trip. The most common success rate was between 1 and 4 hares on a single day. Over the whole season, 8.12 hares were shot in average on a trip, which is slightly less than in 2013, when an average of 8.2 hares were obtained per trip.
The number of shooters ranged from 1 to 17 in 2014 per trip. On half of the trips, an average of 2.0 shooters participated, in 337 cases (30%), the hunter was alone.
It is estimated that approximately 1,200 distinct shooters participated in hare-hunting in the Faroe Islands in 2014.
