Abstract

There are very few records of grasshopper species in the Faroes, with many of the most recent sightings
coming from individuals that have been introduced through human transportation. The only earlier record of
grasshoppers in the Faroe Islands is of an individual of the species Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål, 1775) found
in August 2004 (Jensen & Nielsen, 2005). Since 2004, information exists for a total of eight grasshopper
records: this includes one Tettigoniidae sp. nymph which was found in a garden; three Meconema thalassinum
(De Geer, 1773), with one arriving on some timber, one found on a car from Denmark and the last found in a
greenhouse with many purchased plants; an was recorded on a shipping container from Denmark; three
Anacridium aegyptium (Linnaeus, 1758) involved one arriving on some kale in a small plastic box from
Spain, one found in the engine compartment of a car and one found on a plate of fruit and vegetables from
Europe.
