Abstract
The warm eastern winds of August, 2004, brought several new and rare species
of Lepidoptera to the Faroe Islands, and on August 22, 2004, a grasshopper
Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål, 1775) was found in Porkeri, Suðuroy. This is the
first observation of grasshoppers in the Faroe Islands, and very likely it has
flown all the way from Africa to the Faroe Islands, as this species has swarmed
in enormous multitudes in Africa and has caused havoc there since late 2003
and during most of 2004.
