Abstract
In Part four compares the economic history of the three countries in two
main chapters, covering the period 1550-1850 and 1850-2000 respectively. In all three countries the close vicinity of the sea has been of major influence in the shaping of cultural identities. The sea did not only separate the three lands. Moreover, the utilization of maritime resources has from time immemorial played and important role in the economic development of the West Nordic area and often has been the decisive factor in the survival of the three nations. Consequently, all three peoples have developed a marked, albeit different, coastal culture wherein fishing, hunting and
seafaring plays a very important role.
