Abstract

With today’s media landscapes and power structures in constant flux, the literary review genre is facing multiple challenges. During the past decades there has been a tendency in academic and journalistic writing to see the situation as a condition of crisis. However, the question is whether this can be said about literary criticism in the Faroe Islands where a culture of deprivation has been a reality since the genre was born in the late 19th century. This article claims that the crisis of literary criticism and literary critics defending themselves is not something new. On the contrary, this is part of the very nature of the genre and can be seen as an essential part of literary development and as a precondition for the very existence of the genre.
