Abstract

The seas around the Faroe Islands are a highly productive area, utilised by marine mammals as feeding and breeding grounds. In all, 27 marine mammal species (20 catecean and 7 pinniped species) have been recorded in Faroese water. This paper reviews all known records of marine mammals observed or stranded over the last two centuries and whaling statistics derived from 400 years of hunting records.
