Assessments of pelagic fish stocks and bycatch using environmental DNA and user-friendy samplers

Project Details

Description

Pelagic fish stock assessments, conducted annually, are costly. Limited understanding of fish migration necessitates locating them for sustainable fisheries. By law, fishing vessels report bycatch, a time-consuming process. Our project tackles these issues by developing user-friendly environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling methods. We analyze mackerel and herring stocks over two years using eDNA and streamline bycatch assessments with low human error. Success criteria include creating a method for pelagic fish abundance estimates and investigating bycatch from pelagic fishing vessels, enhancing fisheries sustainability. Our goal is to provide practical solutions to the pelagic fishing industry while maintaining our role as experts.

Layman's description
