Research interests

Skeletal muscle fatigue during high intensity intermittent exercise using manipulations such as fitness training, drug and nutritional supplementation, exercise intensity, exercise mode, exercise duration, recovery, heat stress, hypoxia etc.

Skeletal muscle and performance adaptation to exercise training, fitness testing in elite team sports, match analysis as a research tool in team sports, and fitness testing and training in elite football.

Health effects of exercise training with main emphasis on team sports participation. Exercise as prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases - Exercise as Medicine concept. Physical activity and public health.

Has large experience in invasive studies using novel techniques such as blood flow measurements with thermodilution, microdialysis in skeletal muscle, muscle and blood metabolite analysis as well as single fibre measurements (is also certified to take muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis and deltoid muscles), muscle protein analysis (Western Blot), and research techniques such as MRI scans of metabolite changes and transcranial magnetic stimulation and electrical peripheral stimulation approaches. Has extraordinary high experience in laboratory and field testing as well as match analysis and field studies in football.

Has performed intervention studies (RCT´s) on subject group of both genders, across the life span ranging from young children to elderly, as well as subject groups of different health and fitness status ranging from elite top-class athletes to various patient groups.

Has written 4 books: Fatigue development in Soccer with Reference to Intense Intermittent Exercise (2008), Fitness Testing in Football (2012, co-authored with Prof. Jens Bangsbo) Fysiologi - Grundbók i arbeiðs- og venjingarfysiologi (2013, Faroese) and Individual Training in Football (2014, co-authored with Prof. Jens Bangsbo). 10 scientific book chapters and 25 papers in English, Danish or Faroese in Sport Magazines from 1998 to present. More than 120 abstracts from 2001 to present, which have been presented at international scientific conferences. Has done 15 international podcasts.

Teaching

Has been teaching on all levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD) at University of Copenhagen (1999-2011), University of Exeter (2011-2014), University of Gothenburg (2013-2019), University of the Faroe Islands (2014-2022) and University of Southern Denmark (2017-2022) and has been supervising a high number of Bachelor (n=54) and Master students (n=35).

The teaching at the University of Copenhagen and University of Exeter encompasses both practical and theoretical modules.

Is currently teaching in Bachelor and Master Courses at the University of the Faroe Islands, and the University of Southern Denmark, as well as on international PhD. courses around the world.

Organiser and leader of an international PhD. course 2009 on Team Sports Physiology held in Copenhagen including participants from all over the World. Organiser of an international PhD-course in Epidemiology in 2017 at the Centre of Health Science, University of the Faroe Islands.

Has supervised 10 PhD-students to graduation from 2017-2022. Is currently supervising 8 PhD-students.
