Heðin Abrahamsen was educated as "maskinsmiður" (Industrial technician specialising in machinery) at the shipyard in Klaksvík in 1973 and Víðkaður Maskinmeistari (Marine Engineer's Extra Examination) in Denmark in 1982. After a few years as a marine engineer on a fishing trawler and engineer at small powerplants in villages in Greenland, he became a teacher at Maskinmeistaraskúlin (Marine Engineer Collage) in Tórshavn in 1987. He received a B.Sc. in Petroleum  Engineering in 2004 and an M.Sc. in Exploration Geophysics 2010, boat degrees at The University of Faroe Islands.

Since 2010 Heðin has been a researcher at Fiskaaling (Aquaculture Research Station of the Faroes) where the main research has been Aquaculture in exposed areas. Heðin is now an Industrial PhD-student where Fiskaaling is the Industrial part and Setrið (The University of the Faroe Islands) is the administrator.

Heðin has been a teacher in more than 20 years at Maskinmeistaraskúlin, now Vinnuháskúlin, teaching Maskinmeistarum (Marine Engineers), and in this job he reseived a degree in Pedagogikum in 1997.

As part of the PhD-study Heðin has taught Engineers in Mechanic Physic.
