Anna-Elisabeth Holm is a sociolinguist. She is employed as the Co-ordinator in the Quality Unit, a support unit within the University Administration. From 2021-2024, she was Programme Leader and in charge of developing and coordinating a part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Faroese as an Additional Language. Also, from 1 January 2024 to 30 June 2024 she held the temporary position as Programme Leader for BA in Faroese Language and Literature. She holds a PhD in Sociolinguistics, an MA degree in Language Studies (sociolinguistics), and an MA degree in English Language & Literature.  In addition, she has completed Master’s level studies in Lifelong Learning: Policy and Management (Education Sciences).

Prior to her employment at the University of the Faroe Islands, she had a long career as a language teacher in an upper-secondary school in Tórshavn (Føroya Studentaskúli & HF-skeið), and held the position as student advisor.

Research interests

With a background in language studies (in the UK and in Denmark) and as a language teacher, Elisabeth has a particular interest in second language acquisition, multilingual education, and language education for newcomers to the Faroe Islands. Her main research interests are within the field of sociolinguistics, focusing in particular on language in society, language learning on the intersection of capital, identity and ideology, language and social justice, multilingual pedagogies, multilingualism in peripheral regions, language policy and practice. Her PhD thesis focused on adult migrant language learning. In particular, it focused on the lived experiences of migrants of non-Nordic origin in acquiring, using and becoming speakers of Faroese. It also focused on the specific challenges encountered during the course of learning Faroese and the consequences with respect to labour market access and participation.

Teaching

At the University of the Faroe Islands, Elisabeth has taught BA and MA students on the following courses since 2021: Second Language Acquisition and Multilingualism; Principles and Practice in Second Language Teaching and Learning; and Language, Culture and Society.

During her PhD studies at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 2016-2019, she worked all semesters as a part-time tutor and contributed to the following courses: General Linguistics; Introduction to Language and Intercultural Studies; and Global Trends and Ethics.

During her Master's studies at the University of Lancaster, she was a course tutor (1991) on a joint BA/MA course in Bilingualism.

From 1992 - 2008, Elisabeth taught English as a Foreign Language at Føroya Studentaskúli & HF-skeið, an upper-secondary school (post-compulsory education) in Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands.
