Personal profile

Andras Mortensen is Associate Professor of History. He wrote his PhD on Faroese boat-building tradition at Fróðskaparsetur Føroya in 2001. He has a past since 1989 as a curator and later, since 2006, as director of the National Museum of the Faroes and Keeper of National Antiquities, and since 2011 as a director of Søvn Landsins, Faroese Cultural Heritage. He joined his current position in 2017.

Research interests

As part of his museum past, Andras' research interestes have been in the field of cultural heritage. Since his return to the university, his research interests have revovled around the sources of Faroese medieval history and how to interpret them in a Nordic context. His main field at the moment is legal and fiscal history in this context.

Teaching

At the University of the Faroe Islands, Andras Mortensen is teaching at BA level in Faroese Medieval History and Modern world History, including supervision of student projects on those topics.

Professional Information

Since 2005, Andras Mortensen has been chair of Faroe University Press, run non profit by the Faroese Scientific Society and the University of the Faroe Islands. Head of education for history 2021-2024.
