Description

Translated title: Jóan Jakku Guttesen stayed true to himself until the end

Jóan Jakku Guttesen was a key figure in Faroese music. As a founding member of the band Tinganest, he helped shape the distinct sound known as Vágasound—a blend of Faroese dialect, folk-inspired melodies, and international pop elements.

On March 1, 2025, Guttesen performed what would become his final concert, playing with the Faroese Symphony Orchestra before 3,000 people in the new Við Tjarnir  hall. He passed away in July 2025 at the age of 76.

According to musicologist Knút Háberg Eysturstein, Guttesen’s music—marked by songs like "Upp á tá", "Vágagellan", and "Síðsti dansur"—has become part of the Faroese cultural heritage. His style, though seemingly simple, reflected deep artistic intention and a strong sense of musical identity. He remained musically distinctive and true to his artistic voice throughout his career.
