Description

Title: Why Singing and Music in Faroese Primary Schools Matter – Especially Now

This article explores the role of music and singing in Faroese primary education within the context of cultural identity, globalization, and shifting pedagogical priorities. Drawing on findings from Eysturstein's ongoing PhD project, it examines how Faroese musical traditions are represented in curricula and practice, revealing tensions between local cultural heritage and globalized educational trends. Despite music’s deep-rooted cultural significance, the subject faces diminishing emphasis in the school system. The article situates this issue within broader Nordic and European debates on the value of humanities in education, advocating for renewed investment in music as a means of fostering identity, critical reflection, and communal cohesion in an increasingly digital and geopolitically uncertain world.
