Description

The New Year's concert by Føroya Symfoniorkestur (FSO) featured works by Rachmaninoff and Borodin. The concert sparked a local debate about what it means to perform Russian repertoire during wartime in Europe. This newspaper article concerns the ethical, cultural and political dimensions of the performance of Russian art music in a time of war. The debate about boycot and the demarcations or boundaries of boycot has been ongoing in Europe and the West since Ukraine was invaded on February 24th 2022. Meanwhile this debate has been overlooked in the Faroe Islands and now occurs belatedly. This article attempts to contextualize the events of the last year and the perspectives of the debate in its local Faroese context. This article was featured in the same issue of the newspaper Sosialurin as the article "Larmandi tøgnin".
