Description

A two-day workshop funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers was held to explore the feasibility of establishing a marine-atmospheric monitoring station on the Faroe Islands. The workshop brought together atmospheric experts from the Nordic region and local researchers. The primary objective was to visit Sornfelli, a potential site for the station, and evaluate its suitability for integrating marine and atmospheric monitoring.

Sornfelli, a 749-meter mountain, offered strategic advantages due to its infrastructure, including road access, office spaces, and an elevator to the summit. The Faroe Islands’ location in the Northeast Atlantic, surrounded by open sea, provided a unique opportunity to study key atmospheric components such as sea spray aerosols, long-range pollution, and climate gases, particularly at the gateway to the Arctic.

Discussions focused on the opportunities and challenges of establishing the station, with the goal of generating a set of recommendations for moving forward. The contributions of participants were essential in shaping the strategy for this ambitious project.
